Our partners at Kubota are always looking for new ways to provide customers with the very best in construction equipment solutions, and the latest excavator from market leader’s Kubota is already changing the industry by shaking up the historic status-quo. Kubota are hitting the BIG time.
It was widely reported at Bauma 2025 that Kubota has entered into an OEM supply agreement with fellow Japanese manufacturer Sumitomo Construction Machinery to supply a zero-tailswing 14 tonne excavator – the new Kubota U145. This machine has been purpose-built and specified for the UK and European market, and first units will be delivered this year. The impact of this machine is going to be seismic.

Why It’s a Perfect Match
The U145 delivers the power and reach you need while maintaining a zero-tail swing design for ease of use on tighter sites, such as civil engineering projects, urban infrastructure, or road construction, With an operating weight of 14.7 to 15.7 tonnes and a rated output of 76.4kW, the U145 pushes the envelope in terms of performance and productivity. What’s more, this 14 tonne beast can be specified with a dozer blade giving you extra stability when needed as well as easier back-filling and levelling of sites. And for specialist applications requiring additional lift or reach, a two-piece boom is also available. As usual for a Kubota product, the machine is packed-full of equipment as standard that is often an expensive option on competitor machines.
Twin auxiliary hydraulics come as standard, as well as a premium high-back, heated, air-suspension seat, and 230 degree cameras. The large, spacious pressed-steel cabin also has a minimum front-radius, so you can work in tight spaces without risking damaging the cab on surrounding obstacles. This is a premium machine for the most-discerning of excavator customers.

Why is this such big news?
Until now, Kubota has always been the nation’s favourite brand for smaller excavators (up to 8.5 tonnes) with kingpost boom models able to slew left and right, and has been market leader in the UK for over 26 years because of the almost legendary reliability of the Kubota product. Kubota is also a global market leader in engine design and manufacturing, and these are used across the whole range, enabling them to perfectly match the engine to the hydraulics for maximum performance and efficiency as well as smooth, precise control. In short, it is totally understandable why they are Number 1 as the product has been proven to be the best.
The move into larger machines – the heavy 13 to 15 tonne “A-frame” segment – means that Kubota customers can now benefit from Kubota’s historical strengths of Japanese design, engineering and exceptional build quality and reliability coupled with class-leading aftermarket support, in a much larger machine.
This time the engine is from respected Japanese engine manufacturer Isuzu (rather than Kubota) due to the OEM deal, which is also a great powerplant with proven reliability and efficiency. The whole machine – engine, hydraulics, structures and so on has been tested and proven globally over several years, so new owners will continue to have peace of mind if they expand their Kubota fleet upwards.
Most importantly, this will enable Kubota to better meet customers’ needs by filling the largest segment in the heavy excavator market, enabling their customers to do a lot, lot more. With grater dig depth, reach, dump height, breakout force and lift-capacity than ever before, Kubota’s new machine will enable users to lift more and move more while still enjoying the Kubota magic.
What makes this even more exciting is that Kubota and Sumitomo Construction Machinery have also stated that they will continue exploring the viability of other products on an OEM basis to better cater to customer needs. It will be fascinating to see how this pans-out over the next few years.
